In Memory of Soft Whispy Curls

Dena has a thing about baby hair … she likes to let it grow and grow and grow and grow and grow.  Her baby is nearing 3, and she asked me to photograph his long hair in preparation for his first haircut.

My first attempt was a bust – I really needed Dena there as an “assistant” to help occupy the little guy while I attempted the close ups.  In the end, it took both of us shooting and a bowl of chocolate chips to record the last bit of “baby” Cameron.  And I’m so glad we did … because after a weekend snow storm and a serious bout of cabin fever, this long hair is no more.  I still can’t believe she did it.

Dena - Oh my oh my oh my baby. These are so perfect. That's it. He's growing it out again. I still can't believe I did it either. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that if I didn't, you or Dan would have brought out the scissors soon...February 1, 2010 - 8:41 pm

Frederique - Oh my...These are so beautiful..And Cameron, simply gorgeous! When do we ge to see the "after hairct" pictures??February 5, 2010 - 8:07 am

Oh Boy

This wonderful, darling, sleepy, snuggly and curious brand new baby boy is being welcomed into a very kind and loving home.  I love witnessing the awe and love and commitment as new parents take a fragile little being into their hands and begin a life together as a family.  sigh.  The hardest part of my job is sometimes leaving the magic of those moments behind to go back to my own routine.  I never leave unaffected and untouched.  Thank you to the 100s of families who share this sacred part of their lives with me.

repeat after me: “I will not get baby fever, I will NOT get baby fever…I will not…”

Jonathan Byrd - you both were perfectly professional. we have been sharing this sneak peek with every friend and family member we can think of. what a shot! There is a good friend of ours who wants to conceive, but doctors told her she was menopausal. She attended Rowan's bris this morning and handed him, with her husband, from Rowan's mother to the sandek. She is on the phone with Mary now. She just got her period. Tiny Little Details – Part II

About a year ago I posted some detail shots of my new baby monkey (the original shots are here).  Well, my new baby isn’t so new anymore!  He turned one last month (sob!) and I figured it was time for a new round of close-ups.  It’s amazing how quickly we forget all those chubby little baby fingers and toes, isn’t it?  I’m so grateful my light-sleeper napped just long enough for me to capture these:

Of course I can’t show all those little baby parts without showing the “whole”.  Here he is, just before he startled and woke up (I wasn’t anywhere near finished photographing him, darn it!):

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

Off to a Good Start

I know we’re a little late saying it, but happy 2010!  We are officially back in the office after a nice long holiday break and are excited about the coming year.  We are bringing in new collections, offering framing (yay!), and are planning to launch an incredible new project.  Most importantly, we are feeling rejuvenated and inspired and can’t wait to share our art with you over the coming months.

Here’s to hoping 2010 continues as well as it started!

PamN - Such a great opportunity! One advantage of doing it early in the year is that there is no pressure of the Holiday rush - you and your child can be much more relaxed for the session, and you know that even if you personally don't get any good candid shots yourself the rest of the year, you have that age covered with Darling Art!December 15, 2009 - 8:38 am

Wrapping up the Season

There has been a flurry of activity around the Darling Art office this week and we are quite literally wrapping up the holiday portrait season.  Loads of packages full of gorgeous portraits and albums arrived over the Thanksgiving weekend and we have been busy unwrapping, sorting, ooohing, awwwing, and re-packing with care many, many orders.  What fun it is to see our work – and your gorgeous children – in print.  Thank you again for a wonderful year.

I have yet to share an autumn session with two gorgeous girls from Chapel Hill.  At ages 1 and 2 and more then just a little bit shy, it was a tricky session.  But with a little patience, some ice cream, and a trip to the park I think I was finally able to win them over.  ;)

Most definitely not!  I absolutely love this sibling shot from a session in Northern Virginia last weekend:

This session is definitely a favorite from the year, so I can’t help but post a few more from this sweet and spirited bunch, starting with a big dose of sweet.  This little guy is so, so yummy.
